Juan Carlos “JC” Bermudez is the founding Mayor of the City of Doral and served in that capacity for the first 9 1/2 years of the city’s existence. He was re-elected as Mayor of Doral in 2016 and 2020. He is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors as well as the Vice Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization.
Mr. Bermudez came to the U.S. at 3 years old, from Santa Clara, Cuba. He became an American citizen fresh out of high school. It was very important for him to see his parents assume new citizenship. To quote Mr. Bermudez, “Recognizing that this country had given us the opportunity to start again, I think no one should take his U.S. citizenship for granted, it is a very special privilege that is earned. To vote in this country, even with imperfect things as they are, is very important. Becoming a citizen means accepting that this is your nation and that does not mean that you stop caring about your birthplace.”
Mr. Bermudez graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his law degree (juris doctorate) from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He has practiced law in South Florida for over 32 years and is a member of the Florida Bar and the American Bar Association amongst other legal associations.
The Miami-Dade County School Board voted to honor Mayor Bermudez with the naming of J.C. Bermudez Doral Senior High School at the School Board meeting on June 17, 2020.
